The West Virginia Mountaineers are flying down to Austin, Texas to face off against the Texas Longhorns on Saturday. This game has been a classic matchup over the years and hopefully Saturday is no different. The Mountaineers dropped a pretty cool hype video on Friday night ahead of the game, with some of the old highlights of the Texas and West Virginia matchup.

The highlight video has clips of such Mountaineer legends as Tavon Austin. There’s also the clip of former West Virginia receiver Gary Jennings, Jr. hauling in the 33-yard touchdown catch against Texas late in the fourth quarter. It was a perfect pass from Mountaineer quarterback Will Grier and it cut the WVU deficit to 41-40. Then Grier scampered to the left side of the end zone for the two-point conversion, lifting West Virginia to the stunning 42-41 victory and silencing the Longhorn fans in Austin.

This year’s version of the Mountaineers football program currently sits at 2-2 on the season. They lost in overtime to a very talented Kansas team 55-42. They also dropped another close one to the Pitt Panthers 38-31 on Sept. 1.

West Virginia is powered by their workhorse tailback

There’s still plenty of good news. West Virginia is fresh off a resounding 33-10 throttling that they delivered to the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Mountaineers have one of the nation’s most electrifying freshman tailbacks in their backfield, C.J. Donaldson. He’s rushed for 380 yards and six touchdowns on the ground and there’s no question they’ll need a monster performance from him on Saturday if they want to be competitive.

Donaldson suffered a contusion on his left hand in the team’s win over Virginia Tech, but later returned to the game. The electrifying playmaker has rushed for over 100 yards in three of four games and even blocked a punt in the Pittsburgh game. WVU quarterback J.T. Daniels has played very good football early in the season and there’s no question the Mountaineers will need him to play big on Saturday.

The Mountaineers will have to figure out how to slow down Texas running back Bijan Robinson. He’s playing like the best all-around running back in America and he’s got the stats to back that up. West Virginia head coach Neal Brown is well aware of Robinson’s gifts, and he spoke about him in-depth earlier this week.

West Virginia and Texas will square off on Saturday, Oct. 1. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on FS1.
