Windsor (Conn.) The Loomis Chaffee School four-star defensive lineman Jerod Smith received an offer from West Virginia on Sunday night. He announced the news on social media.

Smith is the No. 222 overall prospect and No. 19 defensive lineman in the 2024 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 2 player in Connecticut.

The 6-foot-2.5, 255 pound prospect has received 23 offers from some of the top programs in the country including Alabama, Georgia and Notre Dame. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, it is a close race for Smith’s commitment. Kentucky leads for his pledge at 17.9%, while Louisville has the next-best chance at 15.6%. Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide’s odds are 13.4%.

RPM was released to the public in December. The On3 engineering group teamed up with Spiny.ai to create the industry’s first algorithm and machine learning-based product to predict where athletes will attend college.

It factors in machine learning, social sentiment, visits and historical trends. However, expert predictions are still a big piece of the RPM equation.

The Mountaineers’ 2024 recruiting class currently has one commitment in Philadelphia (Penn.) St. Joseph’s Prep School three-star defensive lineman Wink James Jr. Meanwhile, West Virginia’s 2023 class contains 17 commitments and is ranked No. 35 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 6 in the Big 12.

Smith has an On3 NIL Valuation of $9.2K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
