Brock Purdy injury update: San Francisco 49ers QB classified as 'a long shot' to play vs. Saints

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is a “long shot” to play in the 49ers week two game against the New Orleans Saints this Sunday, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on Wednesday.
Purdy, who is dealing with a toe/shoulder injury, passed for 277 yards and two touchdowns in San Francisco’s season-opening 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Along with most likely missing Sunday’s game, Shanahan said it could be a multi-week injury for the former Pro Bowler. He missed two games last season and signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension with the 49ers this offseason.
The news of Purdy’s likely absence comes days after ESPN‘s Adam Schefter first broke the news on Monday.
“Brock Purdy has a left shoulder and a toe injury that now leave him uncertain for Sunday’s game in New Orleans,” Schefter said in an update he repeated while appearing on ‘Monday Night Countdown’. “If Purdy cannot start for the 49ers, Mac Jones would be in line to start. It sounds like that that will happen. Kyle Shanahan wants to see how the practice week goes for Purdy.”

Mac Jones will start for 49ers in Purdy’s absence
In Purdy’s absence, former Pro Bowl quarterback Mac Jones is in line to start his first career game for the organization. Jones, who was selected with the No. 15 overall pick in the First Round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, spent three seasons in New England before being traded prior to the 2024 season.
Jones spent the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played in 10 games (seven starts) in relief of an injured Trevor Lawrence.
“He’s gotten really used to what we do,” Shanahan said about Jones via ESPN‘s Nick Wagoner. “He had a good week of practice last week picking up really right where he left off. If he has to go this week, he’ll lead the guys, the guys will believe in him, and I know he’ll do his job at a high level.”
Over four seasons (52 games), Jones has completed 65.9% of his passes for 10,590 yards, 54 touchdowns and 44 interceptions.
