Chiefs owner Clark Hunt's wife, Tavia, reveals family lost 9-year-old cousin in Central Texas floods, sends condolences to all victims

The devastating flooding that struck the heart of Texas and has killed at least 79 people has touched the Kansas City Chiefs organization. The wife of owner Clark Hunt, Tavia, posted a somber and heartfelt message on Instagram announcing the loss.

According to Tavia Hunt, a cousin of the family was among those killed. She revealed the news in the posting, which featured several snippets from scripture.

“Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberly and the tragic loss of so many lives — including a precious little Hunt cousin, along with several friend’s little girls,” Hunt wrote.

The floods have claimed at least 79 lives so far, according to the latest tally from the Associated Press. Many were from an all-girls summer camp, Camp Mystic, that was particularly devastated by the floods.

As search efforts remain ongoing, 10 girls from the camp and a counselor remain missing. Relief efforts continued into Sunday as the full toll of the devastation became clear.

Tavia Hunt appeared to be wrestling with the news in her Instagram post. She opened up on her grief.

“How do we trust a God who is supposed to be all good, all knowing and all powerful, but who allows such terrible things to happen — even to children?” she wrote. “That is a sacred and tender question — and one the Bible doesn’t shy away from. Scripture is filled with the cries of those whose hearts have been shattered, who still wrestle to trust the same God they believe allowed the pain.”

Hunt then posted several offerings from scripture that spoke to that message. Among them were several readings from the book of Psalms.

Dallas Cowboys announce donation for flood relief

The Dallas Cowboys have released a statement on the catastrophic flooding that has devastated parts of Texas throughout the week. Alongside their statement was a pledge to donate money toward the recovery.

“Our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastation and loss of life caused by the floods in Kerr County and Texas Hill Country, especially for the young girls and their families, as well as all of those lost and their loved ones,” the statement reads.

“This has been devastating to see and we hold everyone impacted in our thoughts and prayers. Standing side by side with The Salvation Army’s critical response, we are also donating $500,000 to provide immediate resources for rescue, relief and long term recovery efforts.”
