Conflicting report emerges on Dallas Cowboys contract talks with Michael Gallup

The Dallas Cowboys are going to make major moves at wide receiver this offseason thanks to their salary cap situation. Reports have emerged that the organization will be moving on from Amari Cooper, in favor of signing free agent to be Michael Gallup to a long-term contract.
Originally, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported Gallup and the Cowboys were “close” to striking a deal. However, a conflicting report has come out since then, with Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News saying the contract negotiations are not quite there yet.
A source commented to Gehlken on the situation, saying “nothing imminent yet.” Gehlken is reporting that there is still mutual interest between Dallas and Gallup and that there is still mutual interest between the two parties.
Report: Dallas and Michael Gallup close on a deal
Before Gehlken came out with his report, Schefter said the two parties were “close” on agreeing on a new contract. With the recent Amari Cooper news, that would put Gallup and CeeDee Lamb as the one-two duo to lead what has been an explosive Cowboys offense over the past few seasons.
“Cowboys have been working on a new deal with free-agent-to-be WR Michael Gallup and a deal is considered “close,” per sources,” Schefter said via Twitter. “There’s hope the two sides can get it done and keep Gallup in Dallas.”

Gallup suffered two major injuries during the 2021 season, most recently tearing his ACL on Jan. 2 against the Arizona Cardinals. In the season opener against the Tampa Buccaneers, Gallup suffered a calf injury that held him out for the majority of the season. He only appeared in nine games this year for the Cowboys.
Jerry Jones not attending NFL Combine after reported moves
According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones will not be speaking with the media this week at the NFL Combine. Watkins says Jones is dealing with a minor medical problem that prevents him from traveling to Indianapolis.
Additionally, Jones is in the process of “handling NFL business involving commissioner Roger Goodell.” Currently working on a brand new contract for Goodell, it is not known if that is the reason Jones will not be attending the combine.
Jones would have a plethora of questions to answer from the media, especially regarding Cooper and Gallup. According to multiple reports, the Cowboys will be getting rid of their star offensive player within the upcoming month to make salary cap room for the 2022 season. If Dallas cannot find a trade partner for Cooper, they will release him and save $20 million.
