After notching his seventh straight game with an interception on Sunday, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott provided a starkly blunt assessment of his play in the 26-6 loss.

“Sh***y, not to use the language but it was exactly that,” Prescott said of his night, and the team’s overall performance. “The defense gave us a chance. We put them in bad positions, us and special teams did. … I think the defense did enough, obviously.

“But, for offense, just completely not who we are. I don’t think I’ve seen us like that, damn sure not in the last two years. It’s something that, as much as you want to burn the tape and move forward, there’s a lot that we’ve got to learn from. Use this tape.”

The former Mississippi State star went 14-for-37 on Sunday and his 37.8% completion rate was the worst of his career. His only other game below 50% this season was in the opening loss versus Tampa Bay where he injured his thumb.

Prescott: ‘We’ve got the right guys’

Prescott wasn’t the only player making mistakes on Sunday. The quarterback’s top targets missed numerous catchable balls. Even Pro Bowl selection KaVontae Turpin muffed a punt.

“We’ve got the right guys in this locker room [that] understand nobody played their best ball, simple as that,” Prescott said. “It starts with myself — being accountable for what you put out there, what you did. From that, it’s about understanding that’s not who we are and then moving on and knowing what we’ve got ahead of us: one play at a time, one game at a time.”

Dallas had just 64 rushing yards, 128 receiving yards, multiple special teams mistakes, a pick-six on offense and went 4-for-18 on third down, along with six penalties. Any hopes of the Cowboys keeping their Super Bowl dreams alive depends on the players learning from the Week 18 loss.

The bright side for the Cowboys is that they could return starting center Tyler Biadasz by next Monday’s game, as well as linebacker Leighton Vander Esch.

Cowboys not looking to ‘burn the tape’ following loss to Washington

Though Prescott admitted to his mistakes openly, Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy was still ready to shoulder the blame as well after the game.

“We played poorly and that’s on me,” McCarthy said, via Jon Machota. “We need to practice better than we did last week. Very disappointing.”

Intent on working out kinks, rotations, and chemistry heading into the playoffs, McCarthy played his starters for almost the full four quarters. Their play, however, only provided more points of emphasis for the coaching staff to work on this week.

“I’m not a ‘burn the tape’ guy,” McCarthy said postgame, as he promised the team will continue to evaluate and learn from mistakes.

Cowboys starting right guard Zack Martin put it in plain terms after the loss: “We do this again, we’ll be sitting at home next week.”
