Dak Prescott reacts to Jalen Hurts extension, weighs in on Lamar Jackson contract situation
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was very complimentary of Jalen Hurts amid the Philadelphia Eagles’ star’s contract extension.
Despite being rivals on the field, Prescott said Hurts deserved every single penny. Not only that, Prescott commented on Lamar Jackson’s situation while the Baltimore Ravens quarterback waits on a new deal.
It was a welcome sight to see a Cowboy and an Eagle on the same page.
“Congratulations,” Prescott said of Hurts on the Adam Schefter Podcast. “I’m proud of him. … I’m a fan of the way he plays the game. I’m not a fan of his team and when they have success necessarily, but I’m a fan of Jalen. … He deserves every bit of (the new contract).”
Prescott was in the middle of big contract negotiations himself and signed a four-year, $160 million contract prior to the 2021 season.
As far as Jackson is concerned, Prescott only rooted for the Ravens quarterback.
“I support those guys getting their money,” Prescott said. “Hopefully he’s next and he tops Jalen.”
Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million contract extension, making him the highest paid player in NFL history.
Hurts put up MVP-caliber numbers in 2022, his second year as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. He had 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, six interceptions, a 66.5% completion percentage, 760 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.
Eagles GM Howie Roseman teased a new contract for Hurts in March. He simply stated they wanted to make Hurts the top priority.
“It’s no secret that sometime relatively soon we want to extend our quarterback,” Roseman said, via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “Our whole kind of roster building is going to turn a little bit here from a quarterback on a rookie deal towards hopefully a quarterback on a long-term deal. Not that we have anything done or anything but that’s obviously our goal, is to keep Jalen here for a long time.”
Like the Cowboys with Prescott, the Eagles wanted Hurts in Philadelphia as the face of their franchise.
After a Super Bowl appearance, the Eagles went all in on their former second round pick for the foreseeable future.
The Eagles drafted Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma. Hurts found success with the Sooners and Alabama throughout his college career and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2019.
Hurts and Prescott will see each other twice per year so long as they’re both in the NFC East. With both quarterbacks locked into deals, it should be quite the rivalry.
