Dallas Cowboys defensive back Jourdan Lewis underwent surgery for a Lisfranc injury on Sunday night, according to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. Lewis was injured on Sunday during the Cowboys’ 24-6 win over the Detroit Lions, an injury that resulted in him being carted off the field. The surgery ends the 2022 season for Lewis, according to Watkins.

The injury to Lewis came as he made a huge play for his team. With the Cowboys leading 10-6 late in the fourth quarter, the Lions were nearing midfield on a 3rd and 12 attempt. Jared Goff threw for wide receiver Tom Kennedy but was intercepted by Lewis. It was on that play that Lewis suffered his injury.

A third-round pick out of Michigan in the 2017 NFL Draft, Lewis has been with Dallas for the entirety of his NFL career. Through the first five games of the 2022 season, Lewis has 26 total tackles, 17 of which were solo. His season-ending interception was the lone interception of the season.

Lewis signed a three-year contract extension with the Cowboys in March of 2021, worth a max of $16.5 million. In his first year under the new contract, Lewis had 61 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and three interceptions. Lewis proved his worth and created plenty of reason for optimism this season, according to Cowboys writer David Helman, who explained more ahead of the season.

“It’s fair to say this entire Cowboy cornerback crew had a career outing in Dan Quinn’s first season as defensive coordinator,” Helman wrote. “Like Anthony Brown, Jourdan Lewis didn’t reach the dizzying highs of Trevon Diggs, but there’s no debating that the 2021 season was his best since getting drafted 92nd overall back in 2017. Lewis played 16 games and made 13 starts as the Cowboys’ nickel back, setting career highs for interceptions (3) and pass breakups (11). ProFootballFocus graded Lewis at a decent 62.1 in coverage, with 54 receptions on 81 targets on the year.”

Dallas defense continues to perform

With the loss of Lewis, the Cowboys will have to search for other options to step up and keep their defense playing at an elite level. Dallas currently has the NFL’s No. 6 overall defense, giving up just 305.3 yards per game and second in scoring defense, allowing 14.9 points per game.

The Cowboys will be back in action again this Sunday at home when they host the Chicago Bears. Kick is slated for 12 p.m. CT on FOX.
