The Dallas Cowboys are still waiting on one key indicator in the recovery of star quarterback Dak Prescott this week. Speaking to the media on Thursday, head coach Mike McCarthy revealed the “goal” is getting the quarterback’s grip strength back up to snuff.

“The goal right now is to get the strength to grip the football,” McCarthy said, via Jon Machota.

Prescott did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, according to the injury report, which means the team is going full steam ahead with Cooper Rush versus the Los Angeles Rams.

On Wednesday, McCarthy said that the former Mississippi State star isn’t involved in the quarterbacks’ group during practice but that will be the next step.

Early in the week, Jerry Jones confirmed that Prescott’s thumb is better but that his grip strength is the main lingering concern.

“I know it’s better,” Jones said. “I know he’s gonna go out every day and make progress toward being able to grip the ball. He’ll have a big week and he’ll be hard on himself getting ready to go.”

Cowboys elevate quarterback ahead of Week 5

The Dallas Cowboys officially elevated former West Virginia star quarterback Will Grier from the practice squad to the active roster for Week 5. Dallas Morning News reporter Michael Gehlkin shared the expected move on Tuesday before the team announced it on Wednesday.

Grier will be the backup quarterback behind Cooper Rush who has been filling in as the starter for the last three weeks. Dak Prescott could possibly return from injury for Week 6, which means Grier’s promotion may be brief.

If Prescott does return for Week 6, he’ll be going up against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles.

Will Grier had a promising preseason for the Cowboys, throwing for 186 yards, two touchdowns, and an additional 35 rushing yards on six attempts in two games. The team signed him off waivers in September of 2021 after a two-year stint with the Carolina Panthers.

The 2019 third-round draft pick hasn’t played in a regular-season game since his first season in the league with Carolina. He completed 53.8% of his passes with no scores and four picks.
