It’s going to be long night in Dawsonville, Ga. — for all of the right reasons. Dawsonville’s own Chase Elliott took the checkered flag in Saturday’s Quaker State 400 at EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta.

The win snapped a 44-race winless streak dating back to last April’s race at Texas Motor Speedway. If you’re asleep in Dawsonville, you better wake up — the “si-reen” will soon ring out throughout the town, the Dawsonville Pool Room announced. Good thing it’s a Saturday night…

It’s going to be a party in Dawsonville, just as will be in Atlanta. It meant a lot for Elliott to win at his home track, and the way he did it was special.

The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion made the race-winning pass on the final lap, blasting by Brad Keselowski. The RFK Racing driver tried to get Alex Bowman to give him a push, but the Hendrick Motorsports driver helped out his teammate by diving to the bottom. From there, nothing stood in the way between Elliott and the 20th Cup victory of his career.

Chase Elliott emotional after big Atlanta victory

“Unbelievable. Unbelievable. How about that? Are you kidding me?” Elliott told TNT‘s Marty Snider. “I’ve never in my life. This is unbelievable. Thank you guys so much. What a special car. Just a huge thanks to NAPA Auto Parts and everything they do for me and to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. … It was a lot of fun. This right here is something I will never forget, so thank you guys so much.”

The usually reserved Elliott was filled with emotion after this one. He climbed into the stands to celebrate with his fellow Georgians, and the fans responded by starting a “Let’s Go Chase” chant. Not that it was ever up for debate, but Elliott is the most popular driver in Atlanta at the moment.

Elliott entered the race with 17 top 20 finishes in as many races. Though there had been 11 winners, Elliott appeared in good position to point his way into the 16-driver postseason field. Now, he doesn’t have to worry about that. Elliott is safely in the playoffs, going for his second Cup Championship.
