For NASCAR fans with eagle eyes, you may have noticed Bubba Wallace hit something on the final lap of the Brickyard 400. It looked like a puff of smoke came out of his tires as he crossed the start-finish line to take the white flag.

One fan in the stands at Indianapolis Motor Speedway didn’t like what he was seeing. So, they took matters into their own hands. Or at least attempted to. We know that Bubba Wallace has the biggest haters in the sport, so it’s not that surprising to see this.

Someone threw a beer can out onto the track. A relatively full one, too. Wallace almost ran over it completely with his No. 23 car. Imagine if that had caused a flat tire or gotten into his radiator somehow? A close call, but also a bit hilarious that someone thought this would work in their favor.

Bubba Wallace led 30 laps to get the win at Indianapolis. He claims his first victory in 100 races and nearly three calendar years. It is also his first Crown Jewel win. A huge marker for his career and potentially a sign of things to come from him and the 23XI organization.

Bubba Wallace joins exclusive Brickyard 400 club

Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd, Bobby Labonte, Bill Elliott, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Larson, and… Bubba Wallace. All are Brickyard 400 winners.

When you look at that list of names, it puts into perspective how difficult this race is to win. It isn’t like the Daytona 500 where anyone can win as long as they are on the first three rows with two laps to go. To win a Brickyard 400, you have to earn it from the first lap to the last.

Think about it, all of those names with the exception of Paul Menard and maybe Jamie McMurray, are Hall of Famers or are future Hall of Famers, and Jamie Mac might at least get a nomination one day. Bubba Wallace has joined that group of drivers with his win today.

No, he’s not on the level of Gordon or Earnhardt or Elliott or Harvick. But Wallace has more years left in this sport. His win today shows that he is very much capable of competing for wins and doing what he needs to do to stay relevant. With crew chief Charles Denike, it feels like this team can do things they previously could not.
