The Dak Prescott debate rages on around the Dallas Cowboys as a potential extension hangs in the air. Joining Get Up on Tuesday, former NFL front-office executive Mike Tannenbaum argued in favor of extending the starting quarterback. However, he also believes the Cowboys should draft a quarterback this year.

“I would sign him to an extension,” Tannenbaum said. “That is a stabilizing move because you are in contention. You won a playoff game… The other thing I would do guys is consider drafting someone else.

Brock Purdy, Trey Lance and Jimmy (Garoppolo), they have depth at that position. It was when they lost their fourth quarterback that their season was over. Both things can be true. You can have Dak Prescott and look to get another.”

The Cowboys have only drafted two quarterbacks in the seven years since they took Prescott in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. They also haven’t drafted a quarterback in a round higher than the fifth since the former Mississippi State star.

Cowboys likely to draft QB in 2023

Tannenbaum brought the stats to the show, exposing how difficult it’s been for teams hunting for their next franchise quarterback over the last five years.

“Fifty-six quarterbacks have been drafted in the last five years, and eight of 58, 14%, are sure-fire hits,” Tannenbaum said. “That shows you how hard it is to draft a winning quarterback in the NFL.”

Included among Tannenbaum’s “hits” were obvious winners like Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence. However, he also included Gardner Minshew, who fizzled out quickly as a starter, and didn’t include Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa.

Tannenbaum has clearly been keeping up with the Jones’ latest comments. Jerry Jones revealed last week at the Senior Bowl that it is the Cowboys’ intention to draft a QB.

“(Mike McCarthy) likes to do that,” Jones said. “He likes to be working with a young quarterback. So yeah, we should keep that. If I look back over my earlier years with the Cowboys, I should have — if I had to do it over again, I’d have a quarterback coming all the time. Just for that purpose, just to have him coming.

“And really that’s the understanding that I had with Mike when he got here, and let’s keep one coming.”
