Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts narrowly avoided disaster after beating the Washington Football Team at FedEx Field on Sunday. As Hurts approached the tunnel to leave the field of play, he was high fiving fans in the stands. Within moments, the railings directly above the tunnel collapsed, resulting in the barrier and multiple fans to come crashing down around Hurts.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, fans said that Washington officials offered no aid after the incident. Hurts was luckily able to avoid the crash himself, also avoiding any type of injuries. But after his safety and the safety of Eagles and Washington fans and other personnel was compromised, Hurts is trying to make sure that this incident never happens again.

“To whom it may concern, I am writing to inquire about what follow-up action is being considered in response to the near-tragic incident that took place at FedEx Field on January 2, 2022,” Hurts wrote, via NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. “As you are aware, many individuals, including fans, media personnel, and myself, were placed in a dangerous situation when portions of the FedEx Field tunnel collapsed. Although I was able to prevent that barrier from crashing onto me, that was not the same for others who could be suffering from lingering injuries.”

Hurts wants to know what Washington is doing to protect against this incident

After the barrier fell and fans came crashing down towards him, Hurts’ first instinct was to help everybody up. He then shared a unique and special moment with those fans. Despite how well he handled the incident at the time, Hurts wants to make sure that Washington puts the proper measures in place to stop this from happening in the future.

“Through the initial shock, my first reaction was to assist those involved,” Hurts added. “However, while I displayed a calm composure, I understand the severity of what happened and am extremely concerned for the well-being of the fans and media. As a result, I would like to know what safeguards the NFL and the Washington Football Team are implementing to prevent this from ever occurring in the future.

“The resources of the NFL and team organizations ensure our safety through playing this physical sport, but what happened Sunday put both fans and players unnecessarily at risk long after the final whistle. I look forward to hearing from you on this manner.”

Sunday’s incident is another issue in the long line of problems at FedEx Field. On multiple occasions this season, sewage and plumbing has leaked into the crowd at FedEx Field from above suites.
