Cowboys quarterback Joe Milton left practice Tuesday after hurting his hand, according to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Milton reportedly hit the hand on a defender’s helmet.

It’s unclear at the time of this writing the severity of the injury. Will Grier worked with the second-team offense for the remainder of practice with Milton sidelined.

The QB is getting ready to enter his second NFL season and his first with the Cowboys after being traded from the New England Patriots this offseason. He played one game this past season after starter Drake Maye left on the opening drive, finishing 22-of-29 passing for 241 yards and a touchdown on Jan. 5 against the Bills.

Milton played college football at Tennessee, where he was a starter during the 2023 season as a senior. He enters this year competing with Grier to be the backup to Dak Prescott on the depth chart, hoping to provide a safety net in the room in case of injury.

Thankfully, coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed shortly after practice that holding Joe Milton out was strictly a precautionary measure. According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Schottenheimer said the staff “feels really good about it” and that Milton felt like he could go back in.

That in mind, the competition will continue on between Grier and Milton. The former Vol will have a big opportunity coming up in the Cowboys’ first preseason game on Saturday against the LA Rams.

Tyler Guyton injury update: Jerry Jones believes Cowboys starter could be ready for opener

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyler Guyton could be available for the regular season opener on Sept. 4, according to owner Jerry Jones. Guyton suffered a bone fracture at the beginning of training camp, and was originally reported to have a recovery timeline of 4-6 weeks.

Because the injury occurred on July 28, that timeline would potentially put him on track to play if he has a speedy recovery. Jones addressed the possibility while speaking with media on Tuesday.

“I don’t know (whether Guyton will play the opener),” the owner said per The Athletic‘s Jon Machota. “But it looks good.”

The team initially feared that Guyton had torn his ACL on the day the injury happened. However, an MRI thankfully revealed that not to be the case. In fact, the offensive tackle will avoid having to have surgery altogether.

Now after that initial scare, it seems Guyton may not have to miss any time at all to start the regular season. Even if he isn’t ready when the Cowboys take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4, a Week 2 return would still be likely.
