Matt Corral is joining a full quarterback room in Carolina. After drafting the former Ole Miss QB in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft to backup Sam Darnold, they went out this offseason and traded for former No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield. That’s not even to mention PJ Walker as well. Even with a crowded room of talented signal callers, Matt Rhule still has high expectations for Corral this season

Rhule discussed Corral’s upcoming rookie year before Carolina opened training camp. He says that, regardless of whether or not he’s in the QB competition, that he wants to see Corral fight like he is

“I expect Matt Corral to come in here fighting and swinging. No one gives you anything in life. You gotta go fight for what you want and Matt Corral is a fighter,” said Rhule.

Corral is coming off a junior season in Oxford where he led the Rebels to one of the best seasons in program history. He accounted for 3,982 yards of offense for Ole Miss and had 31 total touchdowns. His production helped take the Rebels to a 10-3 record and an appearance in the Sugar Bowl.

Rhule says the expectations for Corral are his same expectations for each of his quarterbacks this fall. They’ll all have an opportunity and it’s on them to take it.

“At the end of the day, (the quarterbacks) have opportunities ever day in meetings, in practice to compete and to be the best at what they are and improve,” said Rhule. “I expect all four guys to go in there and battle. That doesn’t mean you get the same amount of opportunities. Sometimes it’s other guys, but you get an opportunity.”

As the rookie, Matt Corral is behind the eight ball when compared to the three other veteran quarterbacks in the room. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t prove it’s not worth ‘redshirting’ him this season. If he goes out in training camp and takes the starting job, so be it says Rhule. Based on the kind of competitor Corral is, his new head coach would expect no less.
