Mike McCarthy provides update on Tyron Smith injury status

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy gave an update on Monday regarding left tackle Tyron Smith’s ankle injury after he missed Sunday’s game. Smith re-injured his ankle against the Washington Football Team the previous week, forcing the Cowboys to manage his health as the postseason draws closer.
Mike McCarthy on Tyron Smith’s injury
“Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said it’s ‘too early’ to say whether LT Tyron Smith [ankle] will play this Sunday versus Washington. Didn’t play versus Giants,” stated the Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken.
Smith’s left leg was rolled up on late during the third quarter against Washington, forcing him out of the game. His ankle has been a consistent issue throughout the back half of the season, forcing him to miss four games this year. McCarthy said before on Smith’s injury that they did not expect him to need surgery.
Dallas sits atop the NFC East division with a 10-4 record, comfortably positioned to clinch a playoff spot. Washington and Philadelphia had their matchup this week postponed, and whichever team wins will improve to 7-7 on the year. With a three-game lead, Dallas needs just one more win to clinch the division.

If the only concern was winning the division, choosing to sit Smith might be an easier decision for McCarthy. With the playoffs beginning, the Cowboys will look to rest players and be healthy. Dallas’ offensive line has been hampered by injuries for most of the season.
However, the Cowboys have earned themselves a good problem to have with the season ending. Dallas is one game behind the Green Bay Packers for the top seed in the NFC, and winning out in their last three games would give them a chance at a first-round bye in the playoffs.
McCarthy will ultimately make whatever decision is best for Smith’s health as the Cowboys expect to win their games regardless of who is on the field. Ty Nsekhe has filled in for Smith when not available, and has performed well as his replacement.
