New York Jets wide receivers coach Miles Austin suspended for violating NFL gambling policy

New York Jets wide receivers coach Miles Austin has been suspended for violating the NFL Gambling Policy, according to multiple reports. He did not coach in Thursday night’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported there was “no indication” Austin bet on NFL games, but he gambled on other sports — thus violating the league’s policy. He’s in his second season as the Jets’ wide receivers coach.
Austin’s attorney released a statement regarding the suspension, saying his client didn’t wager on any NFL games and said he will appeal.
“The NFL suspended Miles Austin for wagering from a legal mobile account on table games and non-NFL professional sports,” the statement read, via NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. “Miles did not wager on any NFL game in violation of the Gambling Policy for NFL Personnel. He has been fully cooperative with the NFL’s investigation. He is appealing his suspension.”

Austin is the second high-profile person in the NFL to receive a suspension for violating the league gambling policy. Former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley received a year-long suspension in March for doing so before he got traded to the Jaguars in November.
Austin played in the NFL from 2006-15 and spent most of his career with the Dallas Cowboys. He finished his career with 5,273 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns to his name before getting into coaching with the San Francisco 49ers as a quality control coach in 2019.
It’s another ripple to an up-and-down season for the Jets, highlighted by multiple question marks at quarterback. Former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson has now been benched twice this season, including in Thursday’s loss to Jacksonville. In that game, he completed nine of 18 passes for 92 yards and an interception before being replaced by Chris Streveler, who was called up from the practice squad earlier this week.
