Miami Marlins left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers received an unexpected surprise on Saturday as a throw-down to second base after warmup pitches from Marlins catcher Nick Fortes hit him in the side of the head.

Weathers was evaluated and stayed in the game, where he retired the first three batters in order to open his outing.

Weathers went on to allow three hits and four earned runs in 3.0 innings before being replaced to open the fourth inning. His team would go on to win an absolute barnburner, as the Marlins held the Rays off 11-10 at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The Rays are using the field, which is usually the home of the New York Yankees in spring training, until Tropicana Field can be renovated following a hurricane that hit earlier this year.

This play somewhat sums up the 2025 Miami Marlins season, as the Fish are currently last in the NL East with a 23-38 record. They have finished dead last in the division in six of the last 14 seasons and have made the postseason just twice in the last 21 seasons after winning the World Series over the New York Yankees in 2003.

SEC on SEC crime…

The miscommunication was also some SEC on SEC crime, as Ryan Weathers was once committed to Vanderbilt while Nick Fortes was the 2018 SEC Tournament MVP and 2018 All-SEC Second Team selection at Ole Miss.

Weathers, who was drafted with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Loretto High School (Loretto, TN), is in the midst of his fifth Major League season. Miami is his second team, as the San Diego Padres (the team that drafted him) traded him in August 2023. In 264 1/3 career innings pitched, Weathers boasts a 4.87 career ERA with an 11-22 record.

Fortes was also selected in the 2018 MLB Draft, but went in the Fourth Round to the Miami Marlins. He is also in his fifth year of professional baseball, where he’s hitting for a .219 career batting average with 200 hits and 24 home runs. It’s safe to say that Fortes (until Saturday) had never made the mistake he did in the bottom of the first inning.

This season, Weathers is actually pitching better than his career averages with a 3.28 ERA in 24 2/3 innings pitched. Fortes however is hitting for a .182 average with just one home run and four RBI.
