Three NFL teams are showing interest in free agent quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders are all considering bringing on the former No. 2 pick next season, per reporter Jordan Schultz.

“Mitchell Trubisky (is) drawing lots of FA buzz,” Schultz wrote in a tweet. “…Trubisky is just 27 — Bills loved having him — and several execs told me Mitch is viewed as a starting QB right now.”

New Orleans and Pittsburgh are both looking for their next starting quarterback. Longtime Steelers signal caller Ben Roethlisberger retired this offseason after 18 NFL seasons and two Super Bowls. Drew Brees also retired from the Saints at the conclusion of the 2020 season, and the team started four different quarterbacks this past year. Although Pittsburgh made the playoffs in 2021, New Orleans narrowly missed the postseason after finishing with a 9-8 record.

Washington is set to bring back last year’s starter Taylor Heinecke, but the Commanders could view Trubisky as an upgrade.

The Chicago Bears selected Trubisky out of North Carolina in the 2017 NFL draft. He spent his first three seasons as the starting quarterback, even being named a Pro Bowler during his second year following a 12-4 finish. However, the Bears benched Trubisky for Nick Foles in Week 3 of the 2020 season, and he did not receive another start until Week 12. Chicago went on to make the playoffs as Trubisky finished with 199 yards and a touchdown in a wildcard loss to the Saints.

Trubisky did not re-sign with the Bears following that season as the franchise selected Ohio State quarterback Justin Field in the first half. The UNC product eventually signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills and spent this past year in a backup role to Josh Allen. He appeared in just six games, finishing the season 6-of-8 for 75 yards.

Now a free agent for the second consecutive season, Mitchell Trubisky has his eyes on a larger role in 2022. In a recent interview with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the quarterback expressed belief that he is good enough for another starting job.

“I’m in a confident space right now,” Trubisky said. “Going to Buffalo really opened my eyes. After being in Chicago for four years, there was only one way I knew how to do things. [Being] in Buffalo and [having] a different way of doing things, you learn what’s possible. It helped me get back to instinctual football and using my talents rather than overthinking.”
