Kyle Larson’s race ended on Sunday with a scary collision into Ty Dillon, as Larson’s brakes appeared to malfunction entering a turn. Both drivers exited their vehicles safely afterwards and appeared to be okay, but replay showed just how dangerous the moment could have been and how lucky both drivers were.

Larson’s day stated much better than it ended at The Brickyard, racing in the Cup Series on his 30th birthday. Unfortunately, his day on the track didn’t go the way he or his team planned as he was already a couple of laps behind the field when his accident happened.

As the broadcast team tried piecing together exactly what happened in the wreck before seeing replay, the radio chatter for Larson picked up him saying “well, I got pedals” dryly to his crew. When replay finally showed the impact, it showed Larson clearly entering the turn behind Dillon at an incredible speed and slamming into the No. 42 car.

The full speed replay showed exactly how dangerous it could have been as Larson came flying in from outside of the screen and hit Dillon with the side of his car. If Larson hadn’t made the decision to turn his car without brakes, the accident could have seen the No. 5 car directly impact a barrier — leading to Larson jogging over to his fellow racer to apologize and explain what happened.

The wreck ended both driver’s days on the track as both were lucky to be free of injury, costing Larson a shot at some additional playoff points as the Cup Series nears its end. Tyler Reddick went on to win the day for his second victory of the season, jumping himself up to fifth place in the playoff standings after racing on the Indy Road Course.
