Todd McShay gives interesting take on Jalen Hurts future in Philadelphia

During ESPN’s SportsCenter special with NFL draft analysts Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, the two went back and forth discussing the formers first 2022 mock draft based on his scouting and the things he is hearing around the league.
Todd McShay took time during the show to evaluate Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, making a decisive decision about whether he deserves another season as the franchise’s starting quarterback.
“I think he did [do enough], given the quarterback market,” said McShay. “Let’s put it that way. Listen, if Russell Wilson, wants to come to Philadelphia. Absolutely, I’m giving away multiple first round picks. It’s a clear upgrade and its apples to apples scouting comparison. You gotta remember that. You know what Russell Wilson is in the league. You know what Jalen Hurts is in the league. And for Jalen Hurts, he improved so much that I think he deserves another chance to be the starter, if the Eagles don’t go the free agency route or make a trade for one of these big-name quarterbacks.
“If it comes down to the draft and Hurts is still the only potential starter on the roster, I think I would pass because right now you saw the improvement that he made, brought them to the playoffs, played well down the stretch in the regular season. I would try to build around that and then maybe you’re talking about in 2023 drafting some higher touted quarterbacks some guys with better grades. But right now, I look at this class and if Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett are off the board or even if its just one quarterback off the board, I don’t see Kenny Pickett coming in and giving you an upgrade over what Jalen Hurts is already giving you.”

Todd McShay on Jalen Hurts
In addition to his own performance, Todd McShay believes the improvement of those around Jalen Hurts will play a key role in his future success.
“Jalen Hurts had the ankle injury he played through,” Todd McShay said. “Get the ball to DeVonta Smith a little more. DeVonta set the record for the Eagles but get the ball to him a more and find that identity. Kind of balance it out a little bit. You’re a run team, get that. Hurts is that dual-threat quarterback, get that. But I think they got to get the ball more than just to Goedert, the tight end. And DeVonta’s going to be great, and maybe help him out.”
With three first-round draft picks to build around Hurts for another season, he will get another chance to prove what he can do unless a bigger fish shows interest in the organization.
