The Washington Football Team appears to have one finalist for its new name. According to Larry Legend on Twitter, the Commanders.com domain has been transferred to MarkMonitor, which is the same company that the rest of the NFL uses for their website domains.

The franchise formerly known as the Redskins will now be re-branding again, after two seasons as the Washington Football Team. Saying the Washington Commanders will take some getting used to for fans of the franchise and others around the NFL, but it appears to be settling in.

Interestingly, multiple other possible team names were rumored to link back to the Washington NFL website in previous weeks and months. Currently, washingtonpigtails.com links directly back to the Washington NFL website. Washingtonadmirals.com also links directly to a page on the main NFL site. But with commanders.com now being registered in the same company that the rest of the NFL franchises use, it is all but offiicial.

Regardless of the new name, Washington is looking for a big bounce-back in 2022

The final four seasons while known as the Washington Redskins were rather forgettable. The end to former head coach Jay Gruden’s tenure was frustrating for many fans. After winning the NFC East with a 9-7 record in 2015, Washington has failed to win more than eight games in a season. After starting 0-5 in 2019, Washington fired Gruden and finished the season 3-13.

In 2020, Washington re-branded to the Washington Football Team and completely started over on the field. The team brought in Ron Rivera to lead the team, and also revamped the front office. Washington made the playoffs after winning the NFC East with a 7-9 record in Rivera’s first season, but 2021 was different.

The team won seven games again this past season, but went 7-10 and was not able to sniff the playoffs. Moving forward, Washington is looking for a franchise quarterback and multiple other pieces as they look to return to contention in 2022.

Including the postseason, the Washington NFL franchise has an overall record of 640-642-28. The majority of that history is from the Redskins era, but now, a new era is set to begin, likely as the Washington Commanders. Washington will officially reveal their new name and branding on February 2, but all signs point to the Commanders becoming official on that day.

New name or not, Washington needs a strong offseason. The team holds the 11th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and has some salary cap room to spend during free agency. How they spend the next few months will have major impacts on the success of the first few seasons of the Commanders era.
