2025 MLB Draft: Gavin Fien contract details revealed for Texas Rangers first-round pick

Just over a week after being selected 12th overall in the first round by the Texas Rangers in the 2025 MLB Draft, preps shortstop Gavin Fien has agreed to terms on his pro contract. He’ll receive $4.8 million — which is under full value for the pick ($5.74 million), per Spotrac.
Fien was originally committed to Texas back on August 22, 2021, making an early pledge to the Longhorns. However, he will bypass the college ranks to begin his pro career.
The high school slugger logged a .358 batting average and recorded five home runs, one triple, six doubles and 16 RBIs across 30 games as a senior.
He earned his reputation by winning MLB Develops MVP honors at Major League Baseball’s High School All-American Game after logging multiple hits and batting .400 for Team USA in the 18U World Cup qualifier in Panama. He was less productive this spring, but it wasn’t enough for him to fall past 12th overall.
For Rangers fans looking to know more about his game, Fien described his “carrying tool” as his bat. He expressed the confidence he has in it, noting the development in his power and athleticism over the past season. Texas saw enough out of him during the pre-draft processes, which included multiple meetings before July’s annual event, to pull the trigger on the 18-year-old prospect.

“Fien is a 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter with plenty of bat speed who produced consistent line drives against top competition all summer. While he has an unorthodox setup with high hands, he made it work and was always on time, but this spring he had more trouble finding his rhythm and was often late in pulling the trigger at the dish. He’s added strength, and there could be more power to come as he advances,” his MLB scouting report reads.
“Fien’s added physicality has allowed him to run better, though that’s never going to be a part of his game. Committed to Texas, he has the chance to profile well at third base with plenty of arm. He could end up at first or in a corner outfield spot in the future.”
He isn’t the only Fien in the MLB, either. Gavin Fien, his older brother, was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 7th round of the 2024 MLB Draft. He is currently in his first season of minor league baseball, splitting time between low-A and rookie levels.
