2025 NFL Draft: Adam Schefter reveals how Russell Wilson signing impacts Giants' plans to select QB

When the New York Giants signed Jameis Winston to a two-year contract in free agency, the sense was they would still be in line to select a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft. But questions rose when Russell Wilson signed a one-year deal with the franchise on Tuesday, just one month before Draft Day.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a quarterback is still very much in play for the Giants – whether it’s Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders. In fact, he speculated New York might be inclined to trade up if it means taking the quarterback of the future.
Wilson and Winston join Tommy DeVito in the Giants’ quarterback room, and the franchise holds the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. The growing sense is Ward will be the top quarterback on the board as the Tennessee Titans hold the No. 1 pick. That would leave Sanders as the second QB to go. If the Giants decide one of those players is their franchise quarterback, Schefter said they’d likely be interested in making a move.
“How does this impact the Giants’ quarterback room going forward with the draft? It really doesn’t,” Schefter said on NFL Live of Wilson’s signing. “They have Jameis Winston, they have Russell Wilson and if the right quarterback is there at No. 3 or they can trade up, they would not hesitate and secure the long-term future of this franchise.

“But it would have to be the right quarterback. And I don’t know whether that’s Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders, or whether they would even take Shedeur Sanders at three. But if one of those quarterbacks – clearly, they like Cam Ward. If he were available and they could get him, I don’t think they’d hesitate at all in taking him and securing the long-term future of this team.”
The Titans still hold the top pick in the draft and Schefter later said he expects them to stay. However, he added they will still take calls just to see what offers could be out there. Ward is also expected to throw for Tennessee in a private workout, Schefter previously reported.
Sanders’ name, however, has also been linked to the Giants. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. projected New York to select him in his first Mock Draft post-free agency, although that came before the Wilson signing. But as the franchise heads into a make-or-break year for GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, all eyes are sure to be on the quarterback position ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.
