49ers OT Colton McKivitz agrees to three-year, $45 million extension with guarantees

The San Francisco 49ers and starting right tackle Colton McKivitz have reached an agreement on a three-year, $45 million extension, including $27 million guaranteed, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. McKivitz was in the last year of his deal, but will now be tied to the organization through 2028.
The 49ers selected McKivitz with the No. 153 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. After a tumultuous first few years with the organization, McKivitz began to find his stride in 2023.
In the 2023 and 2024 campaigns, McKivitz started in each of the 49ers’ games, including in Super Bowl LVIII, when San Francisco narrowly fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime. On March 13, 2024, McKivitz signed a one-year, $7 million contract extension with the 49ers.
Now, the star tackle’s long-term future with the team is secured. The 2024 season was a career year for McKivitz. He only allowed two sacks and 36 QB pressures. In contrast, he surrendered nine sacks and 59 pressures in his first season as a starter in 2023.
Despite McKivitz’s impressive year, he didn’t receive any honors from the NFL. He expects that to change this season.
“I’m going to be a Pro Bowler this year, I’ve told countless people,” McKivitz told NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco. “I’m just putting it out there just because that’s going to hold me accountable and get me to where I want to go. If you don’t fight for it, you won’t get it.”

McKivitz knows a thing or two about what it takes to be among the best. In his redshirt senior season at West Virginia, McKivitz was named the Big-12 co-Offensive Lineman of the Year and a Second-Team All-American.
Now, Colton McKivitz is determined to reel in similar accolades at the NFL level. Moreover, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goal.
“A key word that I’m using this year is, ‘Fight,’” McKivitz said. “I do a lot better when things are kind of hectic and in chaos and when I’m fighting for something. I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself to make things a little more chaotic.”
“With everything in life, when things get hard, don’t quit, fight through it, persevere… But then, fight for more. Don’t get complacent. I mean, I saw what happened when I got complacent. Four years ago, I got cut, and, for me, that’s always been a thing that’s kind of haunted me. But now it’s something that I’m using as I move forward.”
