The wait is over, and Aaron Rodgers will sign a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Rodgers informed the Steelers he’ll fly to Pittsburgh on Friday and sign a deal before next week’s minicamp.

Rodgers, 41, waited a while to decide if he wanted to continue his NFL career after his release from the New York Jets, but ultimately returns for a 21st season. He spent two years with the Jets after coming over from the Green Bay Packers, but his first season in New York ended on his first drive of the 2023 season due to an Achilles injury. In 2024, he threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns, along with 11 interceptions, marking two straight full seasons with at least 10 picks.

More on Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers

Rodgers will have the recently acquired DK Metcalf as his primary weapon, in addition to tight end Pat Freiermuth. George Pickens was a Steeler until Pittsburgh moved him to the Dallas Cowboys.

Last offseason, the Steelers acquired Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears and signed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal following his release from the Denver Broncos. Head coach Mike Tomlin named Wilson the starter over Fields coming out of training camp and the preseason, but a calf injury forced him to miss the first six games of the season. Fields led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record before making way for Wilson. The Steelers won six of Wilson’s first seven starts. At one point, Pittsburgh carried a 10-3 record and occupied first place in a competitive AFC North.

A four-game losing streak to end the regular season meant that Pittsburgh would have to play on the road as a Wild Card against the Baltimore Ravens, who captured the division crown for the second consecutive season. Pittsburgh dropped its sixth consecutive playoff game dating back to 2016 under Tomlin.

The Steelers knew they needed an upgrade at the quarterback position. They brought back Mason Rudolph and selected Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

But in Rodgers, they have a Super Bowl champion and four-time MVP under center. Which version will they get, though? The one we saw the last two years, or the previous decade and change in Green Bay? Pittsburgh is hoping for the latter as they look to make a further run in the postseason.
