In the midst of a divisional race, the Pittsburgh Steelers suffered a major blow, losing quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a fractured left wrist. Despite that being a recent injury, however, there is some hope that he’ll be back on the field this Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter shared on Get Up that Rodgers is going to attempt to practice on Thursday. How that goes is, in turn, going to go a long way in determining if he’s able to play or not this weekend.

“As for Aaron Rodgers, a big test today,” Schefter said. “He plans to try to practice despite the fact that he has a fracture in his left wrist. We’ll see how that practice goes. Clearly didn’t practice yesterday. Wants to play on Sunday in Chicago. Has been pushing to play.”

The wrist injury initially occurred in the second quarter of last Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. In his place, Mason Rudolph came in, and played well, throwing for 127 yards and a touchdown in a winning effort. Now, if Rodgers can’t go, the Steelers will again turn to Rudolph.

“If he can’t go, Mason Rudolph would start in his place,” Schefter said. “But he will see how that wrist feels in practice today to get a better understanding of his availability.”

Almost immediately, Rodgers did get some good news. He avoided surgery. That made it possible to return for the Bears game just a week later. It just comes down to a matter of safety and not worsening the injury. How Thursday’s practice goes is going to be the major determination in that.

For the season, Rodgers is completing 66.4% of passes for 1,969 yards and 19 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He’s throwing for 6.8 yards per attempt this season. That’s in 10 games of action.

This injury comes at a vital time for the Steelers and the AFC North race, generally speaking. At 6-4, Pittsburgh is one game ahead of the Baltimore Ravens in the division. This comes as the Ravens are surging in the past few weeks, winning four games in a row.

Aaron Rodgers himself would love another opportunity to take on the Chicago Bears. After all, for the majority of his career, he was the Green Bay Packers star, making things difficult on the Bears within the division and drawing ire from Chicago fans.
