Adam Schefter: Cowboys are 'slow-playing' record Micah Parsons extension

The Cowboys have made it a habit of signing their homegrown talent for the long haul, but it’s not always been done in a timely manner. That’s never been more evident than with star defender Micah Parsons ahead of the 2025 season.
He’s next in line to get a huge contract from Jerry Jones in Dallas. However, the price keeps rising — comparable players like Myles Garrett signed a deal worth $40 million per year earlier this offseason, and then T.J. Watt agreed to a contract to make $41 million annually last week. Parsons will now be looking to top both of them.
So when will he finally put pen to paper? According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, a deal is coming, but it remains to be seen when it comes to fruition. Both sides aren’t in a huge rush, it seems.
“The Cowboys are slow-playing it again. Surprise, surprise. They have not been in any rush,” Schefter told McAfee. “Now, Micah is going to go to camp. Micah is going to be there. Micah is going to do what Micah does. But I can tell you that, going into camp, the two sides were not very close to a deal. I don’t think the Dallas Cowboys have been overly-aggressive about getting a deal done. There have not been very many conversations.
“I still think that everybody believes that at some point this deal is going to get done. But if we go back to last off-season as a road map — CeeDee Lamb got done in late in August. Dak Prescott got done on the opening day of the NFL season. We’ll see when they can get something done with Micah Parsons, who they want to get done, obviously, but it doesn’t sound like it’s on a fast-track right now. Now, that can change.

“I do think that, when they get a deal done with him, it’s going to make him the richest defensive player in NFL history. It’ll be the richest non-quarterback deal in NFL history. But again, not close right now. We’ll see if they can find a way to get there this summer, as they have in the past, with some of their other premier players.”
Throughout his four seasons in the NFL, Parsons has played in 63 games, amassing 52.5 sacks to become one of the top defenders in the entire league. The first-rounder has added nine forced fumbles, nine pass deflections and 256 total tackles over that time.
He’ll be 26 when the season starts, so an extension would keep Micah Parsons in Dallas for his prime. It’s coming, but until pen is put to paper, Cowboys fans will be worried. We’ll see if the defensive superstar gets his money sooner rather than later.
