Anthony Richardson injury update: Severity revealed on Colts QB's finger after exiting preseason game

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson‘s X-rays came back clean, and he will return to the practice field in the coming days, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Richardson exited Thursday’s preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens midway through the first quarter with what head coach Shane Steichen called a dislocated pinkie in his throwing hand.
Richardson dropped back on second down with 7:34 to go in the first quarter when Ravens pass rusher David Ojabo went untouched on his way toward the pocket. Ojabo laid a huge hit on Richardson, who immediately headed toward the sideline, favoring his arm. Daniel Jones took over under center on the next drive. Richardson’s dislocated pinkie was popped back in, Steichen said.
“You know, it was weird,” Richardson said after the game. “He hit me, then I was trying to make sure I had the ball. I just looked down, I see my finger in a different direction. I’m like, maybe I’m tripping. I looked at it again, and it was definitely like that. So, I’m like, I need to get this thing popped back in place and I’m good.”
Richardson, who is competing for the starting spot alongside Jones, completed 2-of-3 passes for 21 yards before leaving the game. He said his finger was “a little swollen,” but that he anticipated feeling better before too long.

“I’ve just got to get my eyes, just be able to react to it,” Richardson said. “… Got to be on my P’s and Q’s when it comes to that.”
Injuries have been the story of Richardson’s career to this point. Richardson, selected No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Florida, has played in just 15-of-34 possible games over the last two seasons. He missed 13 games in his rookie campaign with the AC joint sprain. Richardson missed Weeks 5 and 6 this past season with an oblique injury, only to return in Week 7.
Steichen benched him in favor of Joe Flacco due to poor performance after Week 8, but went back to Richardson in Week 11. Richardson then missed the final two games with a disk issue in his lower back. When he’s been on the field, Richardson has been up-and-down. Over the last two seasons, he has thrown for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 50.6% passing. Richardson has also rushed for 635 yards and 10 scores.
