Baker Mayfield injury update: Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB to miss practice, severity revealed

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield will not practice on Friday after suffering a contusion on his throwing hand Thursday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Friday morning. The third-year Buccaneer underwent scans as a precaution and ruled out a more significant injury.
Per Pelissero, Mayfield finished practice Thursday after hitting his hand. He’s now day-to-day, giving backup quarterbacks Kyle Trask and Connor Bazelak some more shine on Friday.
Mayfield is coming off the best season of his career, in which he passed for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He finished 11th in MVP voting and led the Buccaneers to a fourth consecutive NFC South divisional title. They fell to the eventual NFC Championship runner-up Washington Commanders 23-20 in the Wild Card Round, thanks to a walk-off field goal by Washington kicker Zane Gonzalez.
The former Heisman-winning quarterback has experienced a career resurgence since landing in Tampa Bay prior to the 2023 season. After spending his first four professional seasons with the Cleveland Browns, he bounced around from Carolina to the Los Angeles Rams before finally landing with the Buccaneers.
In two seasons under head coach Todd Bowles, Mayfield boasts 8,544 passing yards (4,000 yards in both seasons for the first and second time in his career), 69 touchdowns and 26 interceptions. He has started in all 34 regular season games over the past two seasons, where he’s led the ‘Bucs to a 19-15 record.

Just three days ago, Mayfield reportedly had his contract reworked with the franchise to go from zero guaranteed dollars to $30 million for 2026. It doesn’t extend the deal any longer, though, with the season after this one still currently being set as his final year to be in Tampa Bay.
“Buccaneers have reworked QB Baker Mayfield’s contract to give him $30M guaranteed in 2026 — a year that previously had no guarantees, per sources,” ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter said on Monday. “The length of the contract remains the same, but Mayfield now has financial security heading into next season, which is the final year of his deal.”
Tampa Bay currently holds three other quarterbacks on its roster in 2020 Second Team All-SEC selection Kyle Trask, 2024 Third Team All-MAC selection Connor Bazelak and 2023 First Team All-AAC selection Michael Pratt. Trask is the lone arm of the trio to have taken a snap in an NFL game, as he boasts 28 yards passing on 11 attempts in seven career games.
The Buccaneers open play in the preseason against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 9, but don’t open play in the regular season until Sept. 7 (Atlanta Falcons). All signs are still pointing to Mayfield opening the season healthy and as Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback.
