Baltimore Orioles, Pete Alonso agree to historic five-year, $155 million contract
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Baltimore Orioles are signing first baseman Pete Alonso. It’s a five-year deal with $155 million, making Alonso the most expensive player at his position all time. Alonso also leaves the New York Mets as one of the franchise’s best-ever players, providing groundbreaking news at the Winter Meetings.
“BREAKING: First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources tell ESPN,” Passan said via X. “Alonso leaves the Mets to make a loaded AL East even better.
“Pete Alonso’s deal with the Orioles gives him the highest AAV ever for a first baseman. He winds up with $185 million, including his $30 million salary last year.”
Since Alonso made his MLB debut back in 2019, only two players have hit more home runs — Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber. Alonso has been one of the best power bats in baseball over the past six seasons. His 264 home runs are the most in Mets franchise history, breaking the record at Citi Field this past year.
Alonso finished with a .286 batting average in 2025, hitting 38 home runs and knocking in 126 RBIs. An OPS of .871 meant Alonso finished top 10 in the category, and for another comparison to others around the league, you can find an OPS+ of 144.

Baltimore will be placing a productive player in its lineup, to say the least. It’s the second major move the Orioles have made this offseason for their offense after acquiring Taylor Ward from the Los Angeles Angels. Now, the attention might shift to the starting rotation where more arms are needed. Either way, as Passan mentioned, the AL East just got a whole lot tougher.
New York Mets reportedly did not offer Pete Alonso a deal
After watching Edwin Diaz leave for the Los Angeles Dodgers, all attention in Queens shifted to Alonso. But as it turns out, there was never an offer on the table for a fan favorite. This comes via Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
“Source: The Mets never made an offer as it became clear to them that Alonso was getting bids for more dollars and years than in their comfort zone,” Sherman said via X.
The Mets face plenty of questions moving forward, still looking to make a splash this offseason. Whether it’s through free agency or the trade market, general manager David Stearns might find himself on the clock.
