SMU is coming off of a trip to the College Football Playoff this past season after finishing 11-2 and runner-up in the ACC. The Mustangs bring back quarterback Kevin Jennings and took out East Texas A&M in their season opener on Saturday. Jennings finished the contest with three total touchdowns and 260 yards passing.
Baylor wasn’t so lucky as it kicked off its season with a 38-24 loss against Auburn on Saturday. The Bears got three touchdowns from quarterback Sawyer Robertson but allowed more than 300 yards rushing to the Tigers. That in mind, running backs Derrick McFall and Chris Johnson Jr. could find success against the Bears defensive front if they don’t tighten things up.
Baylor at least enters this game with recent history on its side, have won the past 13 meetings. That includes a 40-13 victory during the last meeting in September 2016.

Overall, Baylor holds a narrow 39-36-7 lead in the series against SMU. The two teams have a storied history, first meeting in 1916 in a game that the Bears won 61-0. The schools met every season from 1945 to 1995 before the Southwest Conference split up.
All that in mind, this rivalry renewed will provide plenty of interest heading into an exciting Week 2. SMU coach Rhett Lashlee spoke recently about the importance of scheduling in-state schools like Baylor.
“The Baylor game was put on the schedule, I think, probably four or five, six years ago, I’m not totally sure,” he said. “Then playing schools like East Texas A&M, in the past, Lamar, Houston Christian, we need to help out schools in our state. The state of Texas, high school football is the best, and the college coaches are great.
“We all, I think collectively, wanna win more National Championships. So, we love playing those schools in the non-conference to some degree.”
