Former Missouri Tiger quarterback Blaine Gabbert is back home. The 33-year-old veteran backup NFL QB has found yet another new home, this time in Kansas City, where he’ll back up the best passer in the league in Patrick Mahomes, who just won his second MVP and his second Super Bowl MVP this winter. Really, there’s not a better backup job in the NFL. And even if Gabbert does get called into action, he may not have Mahomes’ arm, but he will have all those speedy weapons plus an old wizard of a play-caller in Andy Reid. For one year and $1,317,500, Gabbert may be living out his final year in the NFL trying to chase a ring.

But his arrival in KC also means that he’s now played with both Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, inarguably the greatest QB of all time and the best talent in the game today. That’s a pretty good combo.

Other players have spent time with both the Chiefs and Patriots but not a quarterback like Gabbert. He’s now gotten to see firsthand what makes Patrick great vs. what makes Tom great while taking second-team reps right behind them. According to Gabbert, it’s their will for perfection that really sets them apart.

“They’re maniacal perfectionists, and I mean that in the most endearing way possible,” Gabbert reviewed of the two stud QBs shortly after joining the Chiefs. Just a few months into his time with the reigning champs and he’s already ready to put Mahomes up there with Brady and the other greats under center.

“They’re the two best, in my opinion, ever to play the game. To see the similarities, how they operate in the meeting room, on the practice field. They’re completely different players, as we all know, but the way they approach the game, on and off the football field is the exact same.”

Brady and Mahomes may not be that similar in play style, but they are two peas in a pod in terms of their commitment and attention to detail and hard work between one Sunday and the next.

It’s pretty neat Gabbert has gotten to enjoy time backing up the two best quarterback talents of the 21st century, and per him, in the entire history of the sport. He’ll be turning 34 this fall, so we could be talking about Gabbert’s last ride around the sun. And if you’re going to go out, you might as well try to nab a second Super Bowl ring with the other premier NFL quarterback.
