Brock Purdy injury update: 49ers QB misses another practice, Mac Jones in line to start vs. Buccaneers

San Francisco 49ers (4-1) quarterback Brock Purdy did not participate in practice on Thursday. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Mac Jones is on track to start Sunday’s Week 6 road contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-1).
Purdy is dealing with a variant of turf toe that has kept him out of three of the 49ers’ five games this season. San Francisco has continued to win despite a litany of injuries, going 3-0 with Jones under center, including a 26-23 Week 5 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams (3-2).
“Brock Purdy not spotted practicing at the start of practice moments ago, which means Mac Jones seems to be tracking to start Sunday at Tampa once again,” Schefter said on NFL Live. “Mac Jones has been stellar this season. Brock Purdy is still dealing with a turf toe injury right now, and right now, the indications are it will be another week of Mac Jones.”

Jones has also been dealing with multiple injuries. He has a left knee issue, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said he is also nursing an oblique injury.
Jones has been impressive, throwing for 905 yards, six touchdowns and one interception on 66.7% passing. He is 10th among passers with a 66.7 QBR.

“We’ve talked about the process he’s gone through, and you could see throughout the offseason, through training camp, the confidence built,” general manager John Lynch said on KNBR’s Murph and Markus. “And some of those innate abilities that we saw way back in college come to the forefront and it’s cool to see that happen on a big stage.”
The 49ers are looking to win their fifth consecutive game against the Buccaneers dating back to 2019. All of those matchups have been Shanahan’s offense versus Todd Bowles‘ defense. Shanahan has continued to win the battle but is not taking this Tampa Bay squad lightly, especially given its success in defending against the run.
“Mainly Todd’s scheme,” Schefter said. “I mean, regardless of who they’ve ever had, he’s always a good run defense. When they want to take away the run, they know exactly how to do it. From the calls he makes, how they play with their three/four front.
“Then when you have people like Vita Vea, who is as good as it gets in that area, but schematically they know how to make you one dimensional and that’s why you’ve got to be able to win doing both.”
