The San Francisco 49ers have been without starting quarterback Brock Purdy since a Week 4 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, they’ve finally got an encouraging sign that he could be ready to return soon.

During Thursday morning’s episode of Get Up, Adam Schefter shared that Purdy is improving and there’s an effort to get him ready to play this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. That effort includes getting ramped up in practice. So, while nothing has been guaranteed, there are also positive signs.

“The 49ers seem to be ramping up Brock Purdy in an effort to get him ready to play Sunday against Arizona,” Schefter said. “We’ll see how he feels this week at practice, but practice has looked a little bit different this week, and it looks like they might be getting Purdy back this week after all the talk about him coming back one week after another and Mac Jones filling in. It looks like this could be time for Purdy this week, depending on how he feels.”

Injuries have been a concern for Purdy this season. He initially got banged up in Week 1 before returning for that Week 4 game. However, a turf toe injury has become a recurring issue and has kept him sidelined. Incidentally, turf toe is the same injury that has kept Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow sidelined since Week 2.

In that very limited playing time, Purdy completed 65.8% of passes for 586 yards and four touchdowns. However, he also threw four interceptions.

In place of Purdy, the 49ers have turned to former first round pick Mac Jones. After struggling in New England, he seems to have found a home out West. There, he’s played well in relief of Jones. In his eight games started this season, Jones is completing 69.6% of his passes for 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns. That’s against six interceptions.

Getting healthy would be massive for the 49ers. The NFC West has proven to be one of the toughest divisions in the NFL this season. At 6-4, San Francisco is in third place, trailing Seattle and Los Angeles, who are both 7-2 respectively. Arizona trails them at 3-6, making it a key game to pick up a win. That’s particularly true after San Francisco has lost two of its last three games, including last week to the Rams. Amid that, there’s been an inconsistency they need to overcome.

Time and practice will tell if Purdy can come back and retake his starting role. The team still has that time, though. Kickoff isn’t scheduled until 4:05 p.m. EST on November 16th.
