The San Francisco 49ers were seemingly concerned with being without Brock Purdy for just a game in Week 2. However, per Ian Rapoport at the NFL Network, Purdy could now be out for the first several games of the season.

Per Rapoport, Purdy could miss anywhere from two to five weeks with a foot injury that he described as being a variant of turf toe. That is likely to keep him sidelined this week and into next week, with a chance that it could extend into October.

“Not as good news for the San Francisco 49ers. Kyle Shanahan, telling reporters yesterday that Brock Purdy is a long shot to play this week, could be a multiple week injury. My understanding is that Brock Purdy is out two to five weeks. Two to five weeks for Brock Purdy with what is essentially a variant of turf toe,” Rapoport said. “It is a ligament injury that affects the bottom of his foot. Call it turf toe if you want. That’s basically what Kyle Shanahan has said. But, two to five weeks for Brock Purdy, which would put him out at least in the Saints game this week, the Cardinals game next week and then we’ll see.”

Purdy did not practice yesterday after San Francisco’s opener last weekend, as he came out of it with two separate injuries, one to his shoulder and one to his toe. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Shanahan described Purdy’s chances to play this weekend against New Orleans as “a long shot” and that “it’s possible” he could miss multiple weeks with the 49ers more concerned about the foot than his shoulder.

This is just the latest piece of injury news to hit the 49ers. San Francisco has already dealt with another issue for Christian McCaffrey with a calf injury coming into the opener before losing George Kittle to injured reserve this past week with a hamstring problem. Now, it’s San Francisco’s quarterback who could be unavailable.

“It’s been tough early on for the 49ers, guys,” Rapoport said. “Obviously, you had Christian McCaffrey, minor injury to start out week one. He ended up playing. You have George Kittle on IR with a hamstring injury. Another battering of injuries for the 49ers. A lot of challenges early on.”

Purdy did not play his best in the 17-13 win over Seattle on Sunday. He completed 74.3% of his throws for 277 yards and two touchdowns but also threw two interceptions in the second half in a close divisional game on the road against the Seahawks. That, paired with him being out now to begin what is a large five-year extension that he signed back in May, is not an ideal start to this season for Purdy.

Pending how his foot heals, it may not be a month-long matter in the end when it comes to Purdy. However, if it is, San Francisco would put a lot on the shoulders of Mac Jones as he’d again go from backup to a starter, this time for the 49ers.

“It is swollen. It is irritated. No one knows how it’s going to react,” Rapoport said. “But, certainly, it seems like the 49ers are looking at probably two starts for Mac Jones, their backup quarterback, and maybe more.”
