Brock Purdy, Mac Jones injury update: 49ers make critical decision on Adrian Martinez amid QB injuries

The San Francisco 49ers have elevated quarterback Adrian Martinez from the practice squad for Sunday’s Week 2 road contest against the New Orleans Saints, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Martinez will serve as the backup to Mac Jones, who is starting in place of the injured Brock Purdy.
Martinez, 25, has never played a regular season snap in the NFL. He signed with San Francisco just 17 days ago.
Purdy is expected to miss 2-5 weeks while dealing with a turf toe variant and an injury to his non-shoulder injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said on Thursday’s “Good Morning Football.” Purdy suffered the injury in the 17-13 Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks this past Sunday.
“Not as good news for the San Francisco 49ers. Kyle Shanahan, telling reporters yesterday that Brock Purdy is a long shot to play this week, could be a multiple week injury. My understanding is that Brock Purdy is out two to five weeks. Two to five weeks for Brock Purdy with what is essentially a variant of turf toe,” Rapoport said. “It is a ligament injury that affects the bottom of his foot. Call it turf toe if you want. That’s basically what Kyle Shanahan has said.
“But, 2-5 weeks for Brock Purdy, which would put him out at least in the Saints game this week, the Cardinals game next week and then we’ll see.”

The injury bug has hit the 49ers again
The injury bug hit the 49ers hard last year, and it’s striking again early in the 2025 season. Running back Christian McCaffrey dealt with a calf injury coming into the opener, and the 49ers lost tight end George Kittle to injured reserve this week with a hamstring problem.
With Purdy sidelined, it will be Jones under center for the foreseeable future. Jones has started 49 games since entering the league in 2021, including seven last season for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“[I’ve] been fortunate to kind of play a lot of different roles,” Jones said. “At the end of the day, your job as a quarterback is to either hand it off or throw it. That’s how simple I’m going to keep it, and that’s when I play my best and when I have a low pulse and kind of just go out there and go through my reads.
“Obviously, have that intensity and focus, but really go out there, whether you’re backup or starter, and whether you play the first play or not, you’ve got to be ready to play and have your system that works for you. I’m very confident in that, and I put a lot of work into that this offseason.”
