The Carolina Panthers are trying to write the ship of the direction of the franchise, and in order to do so, they are making adjustments to not only the roster and coaches but also the front office of the franchise. According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Panthers are targeting a significant member of the Kansas City Chiefs front office to take on a prominent role in theirs.

“The Carolina Panthers are targeting Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tillis for a prominent front-office role in their organization that matches him up with new general manager Dan Morgan,” said Schefter via X.

Morgan returned to the franchise and selected him with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft to be the team’s next president of football operations/general manager. With the new title, Morgan is expected to fulfill a role similar to that of the San Francisco 49ers’ John Lynch, who holds the same title. Also, per Schefter’s report, Tillis will play a role similar to the 49er’s chief contract negotiator, who is also their vice president of football operations.

With all the struggles Carolina has had in recent years, it appears as if they’re taking a page and the players out of and from arguably two of the best franchises currently in the NFL. Only time will tell whether or not they have the same success doing so as the Chiefs and the 49ers.

Panthers interim HC and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor not being retained by team

The Panthers informed interim head coach and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor Friday that he will not be retained for the 2024 season, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Tabor, appointed interim head coach after the midseason firing of Frank Reich, is out of a job despite having two years remaining on his contract. He is free to seek employment elsewhere, Schefter noted. Tabor spent the last two seasons as the team’s special teams coordinator before serving as the interim head coach for the final six games of this season. The Panthers went 1-5 under Tabor.

In addition to Tabor, offensive line coach James Campen is not being retained. Both Tabor and Campen were holdovers from Matt Rhule’s staff.

Carolina filled its head coaching vacancy Thursday, hiring former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales. The 42-year-old spent one season in Tampa Bay, a season in which the Buccaneers won the NFC South and saw quarterback Baker Mayfield revive his career. The Buccaneers finished 23rd in yards per game (313.0) and 20th in points per game (20.5).
