Carson Hocevar gives detailed explanation to $50,000 penalty from Kansas

NASCAR on Wednesday fined Carson Hocevar $50,000 after he revved and spun his tires while safety workers attended to his car this past Sunday at Kansas Speedway. Hocevar said Saturday that it wasn’t malicious, offering a detailed explanation of what he was trying to do after he spun out on the backstretch on Lap 260-of-273.
“I fired it up just to throw it into neutral,” Hocevar said, via Matt Weaver of Motorsport. “It’s sometimes hard to get these things into neutral so I fired it up. Honestly, I didn’t know it spun the tires. Obviously, there’s a tow truck in front of me so I’m not going anywhere.
“I was trying to go someplace earlier but the tires were off the ground and they just spin. But they judge based off of actions and visibility and not intent, right? The tires spun, black and white, so next time I might just have them rock the car to throw me in neutral. That’s on me not… I was sitting there in third gear doing a burnout so it’s on me not thinking about the tires spinning. It was educational for me. It’s expensive too. It’s educational for our guys too so I could just say I’m stuck in second and go from there.
“NASCAR doesn’t have the intent. They can’t know the plan and story behind everything and judge everything and sometimes they have to call it the way they see it.”

Carson Hocevar says NASCAR made the right call
Hocevar did not argue the penalty, saying it was a black and white call. He was in violation of Sections 4.4.B&D of the Rule Book:
- Under 4.4.B: “Any actions deemed to compromise the safety of an Event or otherwise pose a dangerous risk to the safety of Competitors, Officials, spectators, or others.”
- Under 4.4.D: “Actions by a NASCAR Member that NASCAR finds to be detrimental to stock car racing or NASCAR.”
“It got to like 1200 RPMs right? I just fired it up, threw it into neutral and shut it off, and I didn’t even realize the tires were spinning,” Hocevar said. “They called it right.”
Hocevar, in his second season driving for Spire Motorsports, sits 22nd in the points standings. He has tallied eight top 10s, two top 5s and seven DNFs. Hocevar will start 27th in Sunday’s race at the Charlotte ROVAL.
