Things did not go well for Carson Hocevar at the Chicago Street Race on Sunday. His day was over only four laps in. In fact, he ended his day and the day of a few others in the process when he wrecked coming out of Turn 10. A nice NASCAR traffic jam.

Carson Hocevar has had many bright spots his season. His raw speed and ability to get everything out of his car is unmatched in the series by most. However, those who cross the limit repeatedly also find themselves in incidents often.

Qualifying P3 for the race, Hocevar was bleeding spots early on in the race. Then, his car was bleeding oil as multiple cars slammed into the pile.

While he likely made more enemies on the track, Hocevar is taking things in stride. He’s hoping to improve and avoid another disaster weekend at Sonoma. The Spire Motorsports driver poked a little fun at himself today as he recapped his short weekend.

“The fingers I am holding up are the amount of laps I completed,” Carson Hocevar wrote on social media. “I am reminded, I wasn’t hired because of my road course racin, but still want to improve and p3 in qual showed that. Just taking it easy at the start and turned in too early and caught the barrier on apex.”

Carson Hocevar still has potential to win

This season, Carson Hocevar has two P2 finishes. It feels like he is on the verge of winning his first Cup Series race ever. It definitely wasn’t going to happen in Chicago. While his teammate Michael McDowell shot out to the lead, Hocevar was fighting to stay in the top-10 by the time he wrecked out of the race.

Still, the potential is there. Hocevar has impressed just about everyone in the NASCAR world, even the people who hate him. Sonoma could be a much better day for the young driver. After all, he won’t have to worry about walls too much in wine country.

When it comes to winning a race in the regular season and making the playoffs, that is the only path for Hocevar at this time. He has to get it done between now and Daytona. Indianapolis is surely a track where he can be a threat. I think he might be a dark horse at Iowa as well. And at Daytona, anything can happen.
