Dallas Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb attempted to return to Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears after suffering an ankle injury. Unfortunately, he still looked in pretty significant pain and had to check himself back out.

Lamb came back in and tried to run a route, but was seen limping off the field after the play. He came back over to the sidelines and took his helmet off, looking frustrated. You can view the moment for yourself below.

FOX sideline reporter Erin Andrews later revealed that Lamb was out for the rest of the game. The effect was certainly felt without Lamb on the field Sunday as Dallas suffered a 31-14 loss to fall to 1-2 on the young season.

Lamb is the Cowboys’ No. 1 receiver and had 16 catches for 222 yards through the first two games of this season. Tight end Jake Ferguson stepped up in his absence to lead the team in receiving on Sunday with 13 catches for 82 yards, while receivers George Pickens and Kavontae Turpin also saw increased roles.

Lamb has recorded at least 1,000 yards receiving in each of the past four seasons and looks well on his way to similar numbers this year. He has been named a Pro Bowler in four of his five seasons in the league thus far.

After the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said team doctors told him Lamb’s ankle injury was “not as serious as it could have been,” according to reporter Jon Machota of The Athletic. Then Jones personally commented on the injury.

“Let’s just keep our fingers crossed,” Jones said. Worth noting? Lamb seemed to be moving relatively well on the sidelines in the second half.

David J. Chao, a former team doctor with the Chargers, broke down the type of injury Lamb suffered. He added that he considers it a “milder” ankle sprain and doesn’t anticipate the receiver being kept out long.

“It was an eversion type where the ankle’s turned out,” Chao said. “It’s a milder form of a high ankle sprain. We thought he would try and get taped and return. He did get taped and return, but his return was very, very short-lived and he is done for the day. The only good news out of this is this is not a long-term injury. Next week isn’t guaranteed, but not anticipating injured reserve for CeeDee Lamb.”

Next up for the Cowboys is a matchup against the Green Bay Packers and former Dallas linebacker Micah Parsons at 8:20 p.m. ET next Sunday. We’ll see whether Lamb is able to go for that one as we’re sure to get more updates on his status throughout the week.
