According to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, the Cincinnati Reds are calling up pitching prospect Chase Burns. A former first-round pick out of Wake Forest, Burns will make his MLB debut on Tuesday against the New York Yankees.

Burns is considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball and ranks No. 11 overall. Within the Reds organization, he holds the No. 1 spot. It’s an organization with some great young players but Burns certainly tops the list of guys people in Cincinnati are excited for.

This season has seen Burns at three different levels throughout the minor leagues. He began the year at A+ Dayton before working his way to a promotion to AA Chattanooga. Burns’ final stop before this reported Reds call-up in AAA Louisville.

In 13 games played, Burns has thrown 66 innings with an ERA of 1.77. His WHIP is well under one as well, coming in at 0.77. Cincinnati will really love his strikeout-to-walk ratio, fanning 89 opposing batters while walking 19. The numbers showed up at all three levels too and hopefully the same is true in the Majors.

Burns began his college career at Tennessee before moving to Wake Forest in the 2024 MLB Draft. He was taken with the second overall pick, breaking the MLB signing bonus record at $9.25. Previously, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Paul Skenes held the honor. The Reds would certainly enjoy Burns starting his career out in a similar fashion to Skenes.

Cincinnati Reds hoping for playoff push with Chase Burns

Cincinnati is currently one game over .500 heading into Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Yankees will be at Great American Ballpark beginning on Monday night. Burns will get to pitch in the second game of the series, hoping to provide the team with a win.

Because the Reds are fighting to remain alive in the postseason race heading into the trade deadline. They have not made the playoffs since 2020, losing in the Wild Card series, 2-0. To find the franchise’s last win in October, you have to go back to 2012.

Currently, Cincinnati is 7.5 games back of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Getting into the playoffs via the Wild Card is a lot more likely, an area they find themselves three games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
