Corey Day reacts to winning Las Vegas Truck Series pole: ‘Holy shit’

In only his fifth career start in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Corey Day is going to start on the pole at Las Vegas. Day is a young, promising dirt racer who will be competing in the Truck Series tonight and the High Limit Racing sprint car race on the dirt track afterward.
Corey Day is still only 19. However, his skills have impressed the likes of Kyle Larson, Jeff Gordon, and Rick Hendrick. After seeing him win the pole at Las Vegas in his first Truck Series start of the season, you can see why.
The young driver couldn’t believe what he had done. Over the radio, Day asked if it was indeed P1, and when he got the confirmation all he could say was, “Holy shit.”
Tyler Ankrum is probably thinking the same thing after missing out on the pole by two-hundredths of a second. Last season, Rajah Caruth won this race after starting on the pole. Day is hoping he can repeat what his Spire teammate did a year ago.
For a 19-year-old, winning your first pole in NASCAR is a big deal. Let’s not forget that he is still very new to stock cars and pavement racing. There is going to be a learning curve. Right now, he knows how to handle a fast truck and get the most out of it in a qualifying lap.
The next step is the race. We saw good practice speed out of the No. 7 truck. So, that could continue to transfer over to tonight’s race.

“Oh man, I’m shaking,” Day said to Josh Sims after qualifying. “I just haven’t had much success with this stuff. Just really been a struggle for me so really awesome to get a pole, and Brian Pattie definitely made my job easy there. So, hopefully we can carry it into tonight. Huge thanks to Hendrick Motorsports, HendrickCars.com for believing in me and giving me this opportunity.”
It’s easy to forget how young these drivers are. When they are beating the likes of Kyle Larson and Brad Sweet on dirt like an old veteran, it’s hard. But Corey Day is a teenager. This is a huge deal for him.
“Yeah, it’s huge. He’s [Larson] probably one of the few guys that’s super successful, him and Bell I guess are the only two who are from the world I am and they’re winning on the big stage here. To have one of those two guys in my corner with help too, he’s a big help, so just awesome man, I’m so excited.”
This is a big deal for Corey Day. Hendrick Motorsports is going to enjoy this one. Watching a highly touted driver start to figure it out this early is awesome. There are so many in that 16-21-year-old range that have superstar potential. Will Day follow through on his?
