Corey Heim throws shade at Layne Riggs after dominant win at Charlotte

Last week, Corey Heim was taken out on the last lap at North Wilkesboro. This week, he’s a winner at Charlotte by six seconds. Heim left no room for his NASCAR rivals to mess with him this week as he cruised to victory in a race against Cup Series drivers.

Layne Riggs was the reason why Corey Heim didn’t win last week. Riggs made a big move to try and pass Heim on the last lap when the two made contact. That led to Riggs finishing P2 and Heim limping home P17. Chandler Smith cleaned up for the win.

After leading 98 laps tonight in a massive win, Heim took a subtle shot at Riggs. He put himself far enough away from the 34 truck and everyone else that there was no chance of late-race shenanigans.

“Honestly, just nice to be far enough away to where someone can’t clean me out, to be honest with you. … I feel like we’ve had the speed the last couple of years here, just circumstantial, haven’t been able to get it done,” Heim said to Todd Bodine after the race.

“Obviously, just such a good truck. Had to execute on my part, the pit crew did a great job. Just a really nice, clean day. Pumped up about this one, felt like we gave a couple away the last two weeks, but redeemed ourselves tonight.”

Corey Heim still thinking about North Wilkesboro

One week later, and that North Wilkesboro race is still on Corey Heim’s mind…even in Victory Lane. Heim has had many races and other moments taken away from him by others. (Carson Hocevar in the 2023 championship race). However, Layne Riggs is just a damn good racer as well and when the two are going at it, I can’t help but watch on the edge of my seat.

With the win at Charlotte, Heim can put Wilkesboro behind him. Those short-track races are going to be tough in this series, no matter where they are. That includes Phoenix and the championship in November.

Nothing was going to get in the way of Heim and the checkered flag tonight. One of those wins where it was already written in stone, his name etched on the trophy, and all of the other cliches.

While the NASCAR Playoffs make sure nothing is guaranteed, I can’t see how Corey Heim won’t be the man to beat in November. This should be his final full-time season in the Truck Series, and he should be walking away with the championship trophy at the end. Four wins in 11 races, he gets that fourth victory in one less race than he did a year ago.

Last season, Heim led the most laps in eight races. He has already led the most laps in seven of the first 11 races of the season. What more does he have to do to get the call-up to the big league on Sundays?
