Corey Kiner injury update: San Francisco 49ers RB carted off during preseason game
San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Corey Kiner was carted off the field in Saturday’s preseason game between the Niners and the Las Vegas Raiders. He suffered what appeared to be an ankle injury on just his second carry of the game.
Kiner is now the fourth 49er running back to suffer an injury heading into the 2025 season, joining Isaac Guerendo, Patrick Taylor Jr. and Jordan James.
Kiner was a four-star recruit coming out of Roger Bacon (Cincinnati, OH) in the Class of 2021. He was the No. 144 ranked player nationally and was the No. 9 ranked running back in the country, ahead of Clemson‘s Phil Mafah, Kansas‘ Devin Neal and Minnesota‘s Bucky Irving.
The St. Bernard, OH native played one season at LSU (2021) before transferring to Cincinnati prior to the 2022 season. He was picked up by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on April 27 of this year.
Kiner got off to a strong start at LSU, as he rushed for 324 yards on 79 carries with two scores as a freshman in Baton Rouge. He however transferred closer to home to Cincinnati for the next three seasons, where he’d total a combined 2,562 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns.

Shanahan spoke highly of Kiner following first preseason game
He made a strong impression in his first preseason game last Saturday in San Francisco’s 30-9 loss to the Denver Broncos. Kiner rushed for 47 yards on a team-leading 10 carries.
“When I watched the tape I was encouraged by some young guys,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said post-game. “I liked how Corey ran, I thought he ran hard. We’ll keep pushing him to get better as a runner but I loved the mentality he ran with.”
Kiner’s injury now leaves just three healthy running backs on the 49ers depth chart. Superstar back Christian McCaffrey, Ke’Shawn Vaughn and Jeff Wilson (for now) look to be entering the season at full health for San Francisco. Vaughn and Wilson split snaps in the backfield for the remainder of Saturday’s game against the Raiders and will likely round out the preseason as their go-to running backs.
Coming off of disappointing 6-11 season in 2024, the San Francisco 49ers open the 2025 season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 7. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:05 PM on FOX.
