Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy nearly an hour late to weekly press conference

Dallas Cowboys (3-3) head coach Mike McCarthy was nearly an hour late to Monday’s press conference following Sunday’s 47-9 home blowout defeat to the Detroit Lions (4-1), per Jonah Javad of WFAA.

No, McCarthy isn’t getting third prize thus resulting in the delay. According to Cowboys public relations, coaches’ meetings ran long. Personnel meetings are now taking place and McCarthy is expected to take to the podium at 4 p.m. CT.

McCarthy and the Cowboys have come under fire after a third consecutive loss at home to open the 2024 season. Dating back to the 48-32 defeat to the Green Bay Packers (4-2) in last season’s NFC Wild Card Round, the Cowboys have surrendered 167 points in their last four home contests. That is the third most over a four-game span at home in NFL history, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.

The latest loss was their biggest at home since team owner Jerry Jones purchased the team in 1989. Dallas went 8-0 in the regular season inside its own stadium in 2023, but it’s clear playing in AT&T Stadium is no longer the advantage it once was.

Cowboys reeling heading into bye week

The Cowboys have a Week 7 bye, which is coming at a perfect time. Jones called the performance against Detroit “very concerning” and “humbling.”

“We’ve certainly got a bye week, but there’s nothing magic about a bye week,” Jones said. “You can do some things differently [as far as] some of the things that bit us out there today. This was very concerning, and it was very humbling, and it was very — I felt bad because of all of our great fans, especially the ones in the stadium and certainly the ones that are all about the Cowboys.

While Jones admitted there’s a lot to assess, a coaching change isn’t currently on the table.

“I’m not considering that hypothetical,” Jones said. “I’m not going to be hypothetical inI considering a coaching change, and I’m not at all.”
