The Detroit Lions thought they were going to get the football back in the fourth quarter with a stop on 3rd & 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, the referees saw it differently with a flag for defensive pass interference, essentially ending the game with the result being a first down, on DB Rock Ya-Sin, and NBC’s Cris Collinsworth couldn’t have disagreed more.

Ya-Sin, who was in disbelief himself once the flag came out, was called for pass interference on WR AJ Brown. After review of the replay, though, Collinsworth went as far as to say that not only should there not have been a flag on Ya-Sin, but there instead should have been a flag for offensive pass interference on Brown.

“Oh c’mon. C’mon. That is terrible,” said Collinsworth. “That is an absolutely terrible call that’s going to decide this football game. If anything, it’s an offensive push.”

“That’s an offensive foul. If you want to call a foul, it’s an offensive foul,” Collinsworth said after an additional look. “Wow.”

“Certainly some hand-fighting, but not even at the level we’ve seen,” Mike Tirico added on the broadcast.

Again, regardless of how egregious you think the flag is, what was worse is that the game was ended on it. Instead of the Lions getting the ball back down just a score, the Eagles got the eight yards at the spot of the foul and an automatic first down. Then, after three runs, two timeouts, and an eventual kneel, Philadelphia finished off a victory with that with a 16-9 win over Detroit.

With that, Philadelphia is back tied atop the NFC with the Los Angeles Rams with a record of 8-2, which is just a game played worse than the two best records in the NFL. Detroit is then still just out of the playoffs in eighth in the conference with a mark of 6-4.

There are bad calls made on every single Sunday. However, with how this one looked afterward, and the context of how and when it happened, Collinsworth likely isn’t the only one who disagrees with that game-sealing flag that was thrown on Ya-Sin.

Officials penalize Jameson Williams for celebration, Lions miss extra point as result

Lions WR Jameson Williams was penalized for his celebration after a 40-yard touchdown on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. Williams raced into the end zone and jumped up on the padded part of the field goal.

The receiver hung there for a few seconds before letting go and falling to the ground. He was flagged and penalized his team for 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play, which was assessed on the extra point attempt. Jessie Bates then missed that kick, as the game remained tied at 6-6 between Detroit and Philadelphia.
