Following the non-renewal and subsequent departure of quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier to the Chargers, the Dallas Cowboys have promoted offensive assistant Scott Tolzien to the position, according to reports on Tuesday.

A former NFL quarterback himself, Tolzien has been on the Cowboys staff for three seasons. After ending his playing career, he took his first coaching job with his alma mater at Wisconsin.

Tolzien was in the NFL for seven seasons. He signed his first contract with the San Diego Chargers as a rookie free agent in 2011. He spent just over three seasons as a backup to Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay (2013-16).

Playing under current Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, Tolzien got action in six games with two starts over that time. He was then a backup to Andrew Luck with the Colts from 2016-17, playing in four games with two starts.

Tolzien appeared in 29 games with 26 starts at Wisconsin, leaving with the school record for completion percentage (68.1) and efficiency rating (153.2).

The new QB coach takes over a room with Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush and Will Grier, although changes are coming with free agency.

Cowboys go with inside hire for RB coach

Like with the offensive coordinator role and now QB coach job, Mike McCarthy is going with another inside hire to replace running backs coach Skip Peete.

Sources revealed to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that assistant offensive line coach Jeff Blasko is taking over as running backs coach.

Blasko has been with the Cowboys since Mike McCarthy took over the team in 2020. He was a coaching administrator under McCarthy with the Packers from 2016 to 2018. Blasko then landed his first assistant coaching job in the league with the Cleveland Browns in 2019. He coached the offensive line for the Browns.

Prior to his career in the NFL, Blasko spent eight years coaching at the college level. He had a three-year stint as a grad assistant at Akron. In 2011, he was an offensive quality control coach at Florida. Blasko then became tight ends coach for Kansas from 2012-14, then filled the same roll at Penn in 2015.

A Robert Morris and Akron graduate, Blasko started his coaching career at the high school level in Pennsylvania.
