Deebo Samuel will miss Sunday’s game between the Washington Commanders and Dallas Cowboys due to a heel injury. He will not travel with the Commanders to Dallas for the matchup, the franchise announced.

Samuel was questionable entering Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears this week, but was limited in his production. He had four catches for 15 yards and lost a yard on his lone rush attempt in the 25-24 loss.

Samuel was questionable on Friday’s injury report after logging a limited practice following back-to-back DNPs. But Saturday afternoon, the Commanders announced he would not be able to suit up in the NFC East showdown.

Samuel is in his first season with Washington after coming over in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. He has become a key target for a Commanders receiving corps devastated by injuries. They will also be without Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown this week against the Cowboys. Through six games, Samuel has 34 receptions for 315 yards and three touchdowns to go with 45 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

The sense was Deebo Samuel’s heel injury was “aggravating” and he was in “wait and see” mode as far as his status for Sunday. Washington head coach Dan Quinn told reporters he was able to get some work in practice on Friday as part of a ramp-up process.

“He was able to get reps today,” Quinn said, via NFL.com’s Nick Shook. “That was the plan to see where he’d ramp up. So it was nice to see him get the full complement of stuff today.”

As far as McLaurin’s progress, Quinn said the star receiver is doing everything he can to get back on the field following his quad injury. The Commanders have taken a week-to-week approach, and McLaurin is now starting to run routes.

“It’s frustrating for him because he’s working at it hard,” Quinn said. “With an injury like this, this is a speed player, so on movements where you’re jogging or not fully there, it’s just not ready yet. … He’s working at it hard. He’s frustrated. But we’re closer.

“As we’ve been going week to week, it can be difficult on an injury that you have to test and push at high speed, and you need volume at it, you need reps at it. It’s good to see him running routes and doing that but once we kinda got to that space, we’re just not all the way there yet.”
