DeShon Elliott injury update: Steelers safety carted off in tears after awkward tackle

Pittsburgh Steelers safety DeShon Elliott suffered a knee injury during the game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night and was carted off the field. During the NBC broadcast, sideline reporter Melissa Stark gave an update on Elliott.
“They will play the rest of this game without DeShon Elliott because of the injury he suffered to his knee,” Stark said. “We saw him immediately grab his right knee. He was helped off the field into the medical tent with the athletic training staff and the team orthopedist. He was in so much pain, yelling out in frustration. He was put on the cart, he had tears in his eyes, and his hands covering his face.”
The injury happened while DeShon Elliott was attempting to tackle Packers tight end Tucker Kraft. Elliott got his leg caught up during the tackle and was immediately ruled out.
The former Texas Longhorns star finished his night with five tackles. This is not the first time Elliott has dealt with an injury this season, as he suffered an injured knee in the season opener against the New York Jets. That led to him missing the next two games.

Looking at DeShon Elliott’s 2025 season
Heading into the Sunday night contest, Elliott had tallied 33 tackles, one sack, and one interception in four games. He joined the Steelers in 2024 after spending time with multiple teams from 2018 to 2023. In 15 games last year, Elliott registered 108 tackles, one interception, six passes defended, and three fumble recoveries. He played in the Steelers’ season opener against the New York Jets earlier this month and recorded six tackles.
Elliott, who signed a two-year contract extension with the Steelers during the offseason, returned to the lineup earlier this month when the Steelers took on the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin, Ireland. After the game, Elliott talked about his performance.
“It felt amazing,” Elliott said, per Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “I’ve been injured a lot in my career, so having those trials and tribulations, man, all those ups and downs — really, when my knee got hurt, I thought I was out for the season. So being able to come back and play with my guys, knowing that my energy is contagious, knowing that my aggressions are contagious. … Cameron [Heyward], T.J. [Watt], PQ [Patrick Queen], I know we going to hunt, so hey, I’m excited, more turnovers to go this year.”
